Handy Hint: Uluru and Kata
Tjuta are approx. 445km southwest of Alice Springs and can
be reached by road or direct flights from Alice Springs
and other major Australian cities. Kings Canyon is 340km
southwest of Alice Springs.
Climate
The weather in this desert town are predominantly dry with
brilliant blue skies. Rain usually falls in the hotter months,
roughly from October till March however it can rain at other
times. The annual rainfall is only around 275 mm. The dry
season, April to September, is the best time to visit when
daytime temperatures are pleasant and warm in the mid 20s
with cool to mild evenings when temperatures can drop to below
10C. Be prepared for some other extremes too, if you camp
in the desert in the dry season temperautures can drop to
frost levels. Be certain to bring a warm coat if you plan
to be out in the evenings or early mornings.
By Air
Alice Springs Airport is a domestic airport and is located
15 kilometres to the south of the township of Alice
Springs. You can fly direct or via major cities within
Australia including Adelaide, Brisbane, Broome, Cairns,
Darwin, Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and many Territory
destinations such as Ayers Rock.
International travellers will need to fly into one
of Australia's international airports then catch a connecting
domestic flight to Alice Springs. Regular flights into
Alice Springs from all major Australian cities are available
with Qantas and from Melbourne and Adelaide with Tiger
Airways.
Alice Springs airport is served by an airport shuttle
which meets each flight and the cost for tranfer to
hotels is $9. The taxi fare will be about $20.
By Train
If you want to travel in style and enjoy the slower
pace of a legendary train journey then the Ghan is the
answer. The train leaves from Adelaide, Melbourne and
Sydney. If you want to take your own transport, but
don't want to drive, then this could be the best option
for you. However, once in Alice you can hire cars from
all of the main car hire companies, who have offices
in the airport or in town. The station is about 2.5km
west of the town centre on George Crescent and is a
15 minute walk to the town centre. The taxi fare to
the town centre will be about $4.
By Bus
If you travel to Alice by bus you will arrive at the
Greyhound Pioneer stop at the Coles Complex on West
Scott Street or those using the McCafferty’s service
will arrive outside the branch office which is located
at 91 Gregory Terrace. Both companies operate direct
services to Darwin, Adelaide and Ayres Rock as well
as connections to Queensland, Western Australia and
Perth. Both AAT Kings and Australian Pacific also operate
direct connections to Ayres Rock from Alice Springs.
By Car
Alice Springs can also be reached by car for those who
decide to explore the wonders of Central Australia with
the convenience of their own transport. Alice Springs
is 1,500 km north of Adelaide, 2,500km west of Brisbane
and 2,800km from Sydney.
Getting Around Alice Springs
Getting around the small town centre of Alice Springs
is simple on foot and there is also the Town Explorer
bus that goes to all the major attractions of the town,
and there is also a public bus service.
Alice Springs also offers a range of quality coach
companies for your transport needs. The town also has
a network of bicycle paths for you to explore, jump
on a dot painted mountain bike with an Aboriginal guide
or hire a bike from your hotel reception.
